The sounds that infants make involve many but not all of the speech sounds e.g. English sounds like the “th” in “thin” are rare. Around the seventh months, baby begins to babble. Infants are more often babbling with parents or caregivers, but they will also babble when they are alone. The babbling have the function of “practicing” speech-like gestures, helping to gain control of the motor systems and to learn the acoustical consequences of different gestures. The Development of Speech Production There have 2 types of babbling: a .) Reduplicated babbling E.g. ba-ba-ba b.) Variegated babbling E.g. ka-da-bu-ba-mi-doy Deaf infants are able to vocalize and cry, but they are unable to babble . Interestingly , deaf infants who have been exposed to sign language from birth do the equivalent of babbling with theirs hand. (Petitto & Marentette, 1991)
